More and more people are looking for brunch in Teatinos: that late Saturday breakfast with something savoury, something sweet and a decent coffee, taken slowly and nowhere near a chain. At LaMaruja Bakery we do not call it brunch on the menu, but it is exactly what we have been serving from 8:30 at Calle Hermes, 10: sandwiches made to order, sweets straight out of the bakehouse and specialty coffee.
What brunch means here
Textbook brunch is breakfast and lunch rolled into one, somewhere mid-morning. In Málaga, and in Teatinos especially, what people are actually after is simpler: sit down late on a Saturday, order something savoury, something sweet and a good coffee, and stay a while talking.
That is what we do. There is no fixed brunch menu at a set price: the display case is right in front of you and you build your own out of whatever takes your fancy. It works out cheaper, and you do not end up paying for dishes you never wanted.
What to order to build your brunch
The display case changes every day with whatever comes out of the oven, but these are the regulars you can count on to put a full brunch together:

A full brunch — savoury, sweet and coffee — comes to around €7 to €9 per person. If you are two of you, or a group, the trick is to order several things and share: the Marujitas and the Marurrolls were made to be broken in half.
Opening hours: when to come
We open Monday to Saturday, 8:30 to 12:30 in the morning and 16:30 to 20:30 in the afternoon. We are closed on Sundays.
For brunch, the sweet spot is 10:00 to 12:00: nearly everything is out of the oven by then, and there is more room than first thing. An honest warning: the most popular things — cheesecake, Marurrolls and certain Marujita flavours — tend to sell out before midday. If you are coming with something specific in mind, come early or message us on WhatsApp first.
Why here rather than a chain
There is no shortage of places to have breakfast in Teatinos. The difference is where what you eat comes from: here, everything is made in our own bakehouse, on the premises at Calle Hermes, 10. No factory-frozen dough, no ready-made mixes and no odd preservatives.
That has an awkward side we would rather admit to: some days we run out of something before we would like. And it has a good side, which is what has got us to over 250 reviews at 4.9 stars on Google.
Where we are and how to get here
We are at Calle Hermes, 10, in the Teatinos-Universidad neighbourhood, a step away from the University of Málaga and well served by bus. There is parking nearby without the usual stress, which in central Málaga is close to science fiction.
